THE CARL G. JOHANSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The late Carl G. Johanson served SHELD for 18 years, beginning in 1954 as Department Engineer and retiring in 1972 after 10 years as Manager. The Carl G. Johanson Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 as a result of a provision in the will of Dorothy Johanson, wife of Carl G. Johanson, to assure that Mr. Johanson’s legacy of service would continue into future generations.
The scholarship fund is administered by seven (7) Trustees, who include five (5) members of the Municipal Light Board, the Manager of the Electric Light Department, and the Superintendent of Schools.
The fund provides scholarship money to worthy students who live in South Hadley. Recipients must be U.S. citizens, graduates or soon-to-be graduates of South Hadley High School, and planning to study engineering at the college level. There are no restrictions on the branch of engineering to be studied or the college to be attended. Current college engineering students are also eligible.
South Hadley High School students have been awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to the maximum amount allowed of $2000.
The Carl G. Johanson Scholarship is awarded to qualifying graduates or soon-to-be graduates of South Hadley High School who demonstrate academic achievement and will study engineering at the college level, regardless of gender, race, religion, or ethnic origin.
Applications are available at our office, or, in the guidance office at the high school in the month of March each year. Contact SHELD directly to learn more about this scholarship opportunity!
